On Saturday 9 November, a mounted detachment of 7 Army Reservists from 71 (City of London) Yeomanry Signal Regiment took part in the 2024 Lord Mayor's Show alongside the Band of the Royal Yeomanry (Inns of Court & City Yeomanry).
The Lord Mayor's Show is the oldest civic procession in the world, dating back to the 13th century and this year welcomed the new Lord Mayor Alderman Alistair King as well as 7000 people, 260 horses and over 50 floats.
The Regiments participation stems from the ‘Rough Riders’ of 68 (Inns of Court & City Yeomanry) Signal Squadron who have maintained a close relationship with the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment with whom the riders have trained for the past 12 weeks at Knightsbridge Barracks.
This was a new experience for four of the seven riders who had never ridden in the parade before and three of this number had no riding experience before training for the event, making their riding performance, with lances or swords even more impressive.
Opportunities such as this display the diversity of fantastic people we have within the Regiment including a Human Rights Barrister, Cyber Security consultants, Outdoor and Adventure guide and Civil Servants, all capitalising on the huge breadth of opportunity available to Royal Signals Reservists based in the capital.
The CO (Lt Col David Burnett) of 71 (City of London) Yeomanry Signal Regiment said:
“The riding contingent of the Lord Mayor’s Show proudly demonstrates the historic links 68 (Inns of Court and City Yeomanry) Signal Squadron, and 71 (City of London) Yeomanry Signal Regiment more broadly, has to the City of London and to their Yeomanry forebears. It is also a fantastic opportunity to show off the varied opportunities that come with being a Reserve Royal Signals soldier.
Months of dedication and preparation are undertaken by the riders, and only a scant few are able to pass the final assessment and demonstrate the standard the parade, and the donning of the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry’s accoutrements, demands.”
