Royal Signals officers who have not yet achieved a degree before attending Sandhurst now have a unique opportunity to study full-time at a university of their choice, thanks to the revised DETUS scheme. This initiative allows officers to live in Substitute Single Service Accommodation (SSSA) while pursuing an approved degree, pending successful UCAS application and Corps recognition.
Under this new scheme, officers can select a university based on personal preference and acceptance criteria, offering unprecedented flexibility.

Living in a comfortable apartment near the vibrant quayside, with all bills managed by Mears, has allowed me to focus entirely on my studies. Each day, I am challenged academically in ways I never anticipated, making this a truly enriching experience.
In addition to my studies, I work part-time with the Newcastle University Training Corps. This role has been incredibly rewarding, as I have the privilege of mentoring some of the brightest and most eager cadets I've ever met. On training weekends, I guide these young adults, helping them explore the opportunities the Army offers and preparing them for the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB). During the annual summer exercise, I supported the Platoon Commanders during their platoon attacks and utilised my mountain biking instructor qualification to push the cadets outside of their comfort zone.
This journey has been both humbling and inspiring, providing me with invaluable professional and personal growth. The In-Service Degree Scheme has opened doors I never thought possible."
