The Queen's Gurkha Signals (QGS) chose the Sandakan-Ranau Death March to commemorate their 100th anniversary.
QGS is a regular unit of the Royal Signals Corps, one of the combat support arms of the British army. The 100th anniversary was supposed to be held in 2020, but delayed to this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The Sandakan Death marches were a series of forced marches from Sandakan to Ranau that resulted in the deaths of 2,434 Allied POWs held captive by Japan during the Pacific campaign of the World War II at the Sandakan POW camp, North Borneo.
Of the 2,434 POWs involved in the forced marches, only six men survived, having escaped with the help from locals.
