A new photography exhibition depicting the diverse roles of female soldiers and officers, taken by serving soldiers, has been launched by the Royal Signals Women in Technology Network in conjunction with the Royal Signals Museum and Spectra to mark International Women's Day 2024.
The Royal Signals, the British Army's communications, IT, and cyber support specialists, have one of the most diverse roles of any corps and all posts are open to women. This exhibition, capturing every rank from Signaller to General, demonstrates not just the range of opportunities available but also the extraordinarily talented women that the Corps attracts.
Lt Col Vanessa McDermott, President of the Royal Signals Women in Technology Network said, ‘The Royal Signals has a long history of supporting women in their military careers to achieve their full potential. We’ve used International Women’s Day 2024 as an opportunity to showcase just some of these amazing women of whom we are so proud. From Signaller to Lieutenant General – you can see it and you can be it!’
Lt Col McDermott established the network in 2017 with the principal aim of creating a forum to inspire and encourage servicewomen in the Corps to achieve their full potential within a technical field through dialogue, cooperation and personal development. The Network currently has over 500 members, including many male allies.
The Royal Signals Women in Technology Exhibition was the idea of Major Johanna Mayhead at Headquarters Royal Signals, who has designed and curated the exhibition. The majority of photographs were taken, selected and edited by serving members of the Royal Signals. The display was unveiled yesterday at the Royal Signals Museum, Blandford Camp, Dorset and will be exhibited there between 7 March and 12 April, then tour a range of venues including, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Army Headquarters and ATC Pirbright, where Phase 1 training takes place.
