The 23 Jun 21 is International Women in Engineering day and the Royal Signals wants to celebrate all of the female engineers in the Corps and the huge contribution they make to our success. We want to highlight a few stories from our female engineers to show the diversity of job opportunities and experience that is on offer and how fantastic they are.
Capt Nicki Mc Neal is a technical officer in Information Systems at 13 Signal Regiment, the British Army's only cyber Regiment. She leads the defensive cyber operations team within the Security Operations Centre, planning to counter cyber threats should they appear. Nicki said, 'We support other Defence teams on a daily basis, so our engineers have great opportunities to develop and enhance their engineering skills. We have approximately 15 women in engineering roles, with all of them being open to women."
Cpl Nicola Parker is serving as a communication engineer with 3 (UK) Div Sig Regt and has had a very diverse career, including deploying as the only engineer in a remote base in Afghanistan where she was responsible for all communications systems. Nicola said, 'Women are still under-represented in the world of engineering with only 21% of uni engineering graduates being female. I'd love to see more young women stepping into the field and enjoying it as much as me!'
The British Army’s commitment to STEM is growing and Warrant Officer Tash Morris, our Corps Forman of IS, who last year was named Engineering Soldier of the Year said, 'Women in STEM roles is not a new concept; we have been doing these jobs for a long time and as we move forwards into the second century of the Royal Signals' existence, we continue to provide our young soldiers with fantastic opportunities to develop and grow in STEM.'
