The Royal Signals Museum is collecting local family stories of the Second World War for a national digital archive. Working with Their Finest Hour - a project led by the University of Oxford and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund - people from across Dorset are being asked to bring diaries, letters, photographs, or objects to be photographed and uploaded to the database.
The collection day is taking place on Saturday 19 August 2023, between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Visitors aged 16+ require photo ID to access Blandford Camp.
Photo With the Chindits in Burma. In December 1941 Japan entered the war and by February 1942 had overrun Malaya, Singapore and Hong Kong. The Japanese then turned on Burma and the Commonwealth forces retreated to the Indian frontier. The Chindits mounted major, deep penetration raids to harry the enemy. Wireless was vital and was operated in tough conditions. Difficulties such as high humidity were overcome by better packing and sealing but it was dedication and experience that made wireless work efficiently and reliably.
