Captain Goward, an Army Reservist with 71st Yeomanry Signal Regiment in London, has been awarded a commendation for conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that helped save the life of a man in Kent. The General Officer Commanding 3rd (UK) Division’s commendation was presented during the 2022 Lord Mayor’s Show by U.S. Major General John B. Richardson IV, who had travelled from the American 1st Cavalry Division in Texas to take part in the parade.
The award was issued after Captain Goward discovered a collapsed man in Edenbridge, Kent, in 2021. He immediately liaised with 999 call handlers who confirmed that basic life support was urgently required. He then began conducting CPR until the emergency services arrived on the scene, and maintained this whilst paramedics sought to establish an airway in the casualty. The man received further treatment at the roadside before being rushed to hospital, where he went on to make a full recovery.
Commenting on his award, Captain Goward said: “I’m honoured to have received this commendation, and am so pleased that the gentleman was successfully discharged from hospital following the fantastic work done by South East Coast Ambulance Service and the NHS. I have gained many transferrable skills from my career in the Army Reserve and the First Aid training I was able to utilise in these circumstances is invaluable."
Captain Goward currently serves as Second-in-Command of 68 (Inns of Court and City Yeomanry) Signal Squadron, 71st Yeomanry Signal Regiment in Central London.
