Last week a BAE Systems-sponsored portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Anthea Burdus, Royal Signals, was unveiled at the Army Headquartes in Andover. Recognised as an unsung hero, Lt Col Burdus was selected by a panel for her exceptional impact on paving the way for women in the Army.
Having joined the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) in the 1980s, she transferred to the Royal Signals, where she broke multiple barriers:
· First female Regimental Sergeant Major at a training establishment.
· First woman in the Royal Signals to receive a Late Entry commission.
· First female soldier to attain the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Now serving in a Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS) role, her contributions continue to inspire. Her portrait will be displayed at Army HQ for a month before moving to a permanent position in the Officers’ Mess.
