The R SIGNALS offers opportunities that go far beyond your day-to-day trade. Sgt J Cavanagh, from 21 Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare), has been putting his strength and resilience to the test at the World's Strongest Soldier competition in Finland - proof that life in the Corps can lead in some unexpected directions.
The competition is built around a simple idea: find the soldier who best combines raw physical power with the discipline and mental grit that military life demands. Competitors aren't able to simply sign up, they're nominated by their nation's armed forces or personally invited to take part, so selection alone is an achievement. The event blends traditional strongman disciplines, such as atlas stones and yoke carries, with military-specific challenges including obstacle courses, shooting stages and loading medleys, all designed to test endurance under pressure.
First staged as a televised special filmed in Finland, the competition drew competitors from eight nations in its debut year, including the UK, US, Germany, Belgium, Latvia and Finland. It's now expanding into a full television series for 2026, with filming taking place across both Finland and Germany giving it a growing international profile.
We’re incredibly proud of Jordan’s achievement and the way he has represented the Corps on the international stage.
