The Royal Signals Charity plays a key role in supporting the well-being of soldiers, notably through Adventurous Training (AT) expeditions. One such example is Ex TIGER LANGTANG, a Level 3 expedition to Nepal that took place from 17th February to 7th March 2025. The expedition tested the physical and mental resilience of the participants while promoting teamwork in extreme conditions.
Lt Col Mark Arscott and Maj Fred Boardman (both R Signals), along with 12 other team members trekked through the Langtang Valley, north of Kathmandu. From the challenging eight-hour journey to the trailhead, to climbing peaks over 4700 meters, the expedition pushed participants to their limits. The demanding terrain, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather required strong physical endurance and mental toughness.
The team successfully reached the summit of Kyanjin Ri, where they left their names on prayer flags as a sign of accomplishment. However, a key challenge arose when one team member suffered a knee injury, requiring a complex evacuation. This highlighted the importance of proper medical and safety support, particularly in such complex environments.
Beyond physical challenges, the expedition offered cultural enrichment, with visits to Kathmandu and Pokhara, and a chance to learn about the Gurkha recruitment process. These experiences were helped to be made possible by the Royal Signals Charity, which provided grants to each Royal Signals personnel to help with the costs.
Maj F H Boardman said “The R SIGNALS Charity were extremely supportive with Ex TIGER LANGTANG. Nepal was an amazing experience, and the trek pushed us to reach new heights”
Ex TIGER LANGTANG showcases how the Royal Signals Charity supports its soldiers, not just through financial assistance, but by fostering resilience, teamwork, and personal development. Through such initiatives, the charity ensures soldiers are prepared to face any challenge, both in training and in life.
